The most valuable card in your wallet might just be your library card

By Chris La Pelusa

HUNTLEY – It’s often said that nothing in life is free. And often enough that’s true. But what’s said for not taking advantage of the full value of something you’re already paying for that includes a diverse selection of free resources, events, and entertainment?

Whether or not there’s an adage to describe such a thing, such a thing exists in maxing out the benefits of using your Huntley Area Public Library card.

“We want to remind people that the library is a great value,” said Huntley Area Public Library Director Patrick McDonald. “Residents pay taxes to support the library, and we want to make sure they don’t lose out on the great value offered in return. Nearly everything we offer is free to a resident with a library card.”

In addition to the range of books, movies, music, and Internet resources available, McDonald highlighted other areas of interest that include book-discussion groups and senior coffees. Special services such as a free Library2Go service also top the list of advantages to having a library card.

“We can come out to an individual’s residence if they aren’t able to come to the library, because of a temporary disability or a more long-term condition and … bring library materials to them free of charge,” McDonald said. And when residents using the Library2Go service are finished with the borrowed resources, the library will pick them back up.

“It’s a great [feature] … that allows us to offer service for people who maybe aren’t able to come to the library,” McDonald said.

Library cards are also able to be issued through Library2Go.

“There’s a wealth of information, entertainment, social interaction, and community interaction that’s available here at the library at a tremendous value,” McDonald said. “There’s a world of opportunity here. We want to make sure that people are aware of all that’s here waiting for them.”
