2 vocals + 1 guitar = AJ & Jon

By Chris La Pelusa

SUN CITY – “It’s the blend of our two voices that reminds you of that sound,” said AJ Swearingen, one half of the tribute band to Simon & Garfunkel’s music.

At 7 p.m. on Monday, July 12, Swearingen and bandmate Jonathan Beedle will take the quiet stage at Drendel Ballroom with nothing but their two voices and a single guitar and relive the music of Simon & Garfunkel for Sun City residents.

“Definitely for a lot of people, it’s a walk down memory lane,” Swearingen said. “It brings back a lot of memories, what we’re doing.”

Swearingen provides the guitar and vocals of Paul Simon, while Beedle takes after Art Garfunkel. However, Swearingen said, “I’m not manipulating my voice to sound like Paul Simon, and Jonathan isn’t forcing his voice to sound like Art Garfunkel. We like to call [ourselves] more a Simon & Garfunkel retrospective.”

Swearingen and Beedle will perform Simon & Garfunkel’s classic hits, as well as their more obscure music, bringing Sun City Simon & Garfunkel fans back to the sound of Simon & Garfunkel’s early years in Greenwich Village.

“We are really doing the music justice. For me and Jon, that’s our goal. To just really channel it. You’re doing really good music, so you have to really have your [game] together. And when it’s just a guitar and two voices, you’re out there naked like that. It’s very challenging. And it never gets boring to us,” said Swearingen. “We love the music, and we hope that that comes through.”
