WGN interviews Stingrays

By My Sunday News

Lights, camera, action! When six Sun City Stingrays arrived at their second summer swim meet held in Homewood, Il on Tuesday, August 24, they were greeted by a WGN television reporter, microphone held in his hand, and by his accompanying WGN camera lady. The meet was advertised as a “Senior Fun Meet,” and indeed it was, with only six planned swimming events and the further enticement of waterslide usage and a barbeque lunch cooked by the head coach himself. No one, however, could have envisioned that Lion’s Park Coach, Eric Eenslen, would have surprised the competitors with television visitors! Even though competition was low in number for our swimmers, the fact that each “tanker” was to be interviewed and possibly make the 4-minute-plus news cut added to the sunny warm day atmosphere of this outside meet. Our “feerless six” went on to accumulate 16 medals! Caryl Fabian led the medal count with 4 gold medals in the 50 yard Freestyle, the 100 yard IM, the 50 yard Breaststroke, and the 100 yard Freestyle. Joanie Koplos continued the “Sting’s” winning ways with her 4 medals won as bronze in the 50 Freestyle, gold in the 50 yard Backstroke, silver in the 50 yard Breaststroke, and bronze in the 100 yard Freestyle. Nick Koplos, her husband, won two gold medals in the 50 yard Freestyle and in the 100 yard Freestyle. Joe Loughlin took a gold in the 50 yard breaststroke and a silver in the 100 yard Freestyle. Joan Souchek added to the total with her silver in the 50 yard Freestyle and her gold in the 50 yard Backstroke. Sandy Sterling finished the total count with two silvers in the 50 yard Freestyle and in the 100 yard Freestyle. And yes, Sun City residents, you really did see competitive Stingray swimmers on the 5 o’clock Channel 9 News that day and on the WGN Early and Noon News the next day, Wednesday, August 25 (as well as on the CLTV Noon News Show that Wednesday). The news story titled “Senior Swimmers Race Into Their 80’s!” featured Caryl Fabian, Joe Loughlin, and Joanie Koplos.
