SUN CITY- Huntley High School students and Sun City residents have been creating exquisite music together for the past 3 years. Residents such as Sam Geati of N.33, who is a member of a men’s tap-dance group called “The Hunks,” the Tall Oaks Tennis Club, the “Travelers” softball team, the 51-piece Concert Band, the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble titled “Lets Dance,” and his own trio, “Blue Skies,” has been working with the students at Huntley High School for the past year.
“I had a great time working with the kids … These are exceptional kids that worked so hard … They were so much fun to work with,” said Geati.
Donna Bressler of N.27, who is the Director of the Concert Band, works with the Prairie Singers, is a member of Clay Grounds, and works on the Boards’ Marketing committee, said that, “It’s all about the kids.”
Bressler has worked hard to create a 500-dollar scholarship that is awarded to one Huntley High School student to help him or her pursue their musical aspirations. Bressler’s work has also been critical in providing a 1000-dollar donation to the Huntley High School band for the past three years.
“We have a really good relationship going [Sun City and Huntley High School]… Nick Konwerski [Huntley HIGH SCHOOL Band Director] is a really great director and asset to the high school district [he brings] a lot of enthusiasm and really cares about the kids and the music,” said Bressler.
Nick Konwerski has been the Band Director at Huntley High School for three years now and has enjoyed Sun City’s participation with his students.
“It’s definitely a unique experience,” said Konwerski.
“It would most assuredly be safe to say that the students are benefiting from the relationship that has continued between Sun City and Huntley High School Sam brought Larry McCormick…a huge living legend…out to an event that we did with the marching band in September…[to] critique the marching band for us … I knew him [Larry McCormick] when I was in high school,” explained Konwerski. “The greatest thing about it is that they’re [Sun City Residents] showing the kids, ‘Hey look…I may have put my instrument down after I graduated high school or college, and here I am. I’m retired, and I’m playing again.”
So if you’re itching to hear two generations come together to create exquisite music, then you should go to the Combined Concert in March [specific date and time yet to be set]. The Sun City Concert Band has a concert Thursday December 9 at 7 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom and Saturday December 11 at 1 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom. Tickets are on sale now at the Prairie Lodge.
“I’m so impressed by how hard they [HHS students] work,” said Geati.
