My old drum corps and tennis buddy, Mike McGuigan of Neighborhood 18 writes: āI just had one of those āGeezer Momentsā you write about. I was writing out a check to send in the mail.Ā I got the stamp and the return label on the envelope and put it in the mail. The following day, I get the envelope back with a handwritten note – “Returned for address.” Yes, it went into the mailbox as a stamped envelope with absolutely no address whatsoever on it! Hey, the good intention was there; it’s just that the execution was a bit lacking. It has now been addressed properly and is back on its way. It’s funny how the USPS insists on addresses, ya know??ā Iām with you, Mike. The gall of the USPS expecting us to do all that work and pay for postage, too!
Interesting thing about our relationship is that Mike and I competed against each other while he was a member of the Madison Scouts Drum Corps and I was in the Cavaliers Corps way back in the 50s. We didnāt know each other at the time, but came to find this out when we met playing tennis here in Sun City. Iām sure many of the residents of Sun City, Huntley, have renewed old friendships or found out that they went to the same schools and just lost touch with old friends until they moved here. My wife and I have experienced this quite often in the four years we have lived here. If you have a similar story to tell, by all means, send it along. I think, in a way, that those true stories qualify as special āGeezer Momentsā too.
Finally, I want to thank all of you who have contributed to this column and made a point of telling me that my column helped them to laugh at themselves and the funny things we seniors do. That was the goal from the first column.
Thatās it for 2010. I am looking forward to 2011 and continuing to write and relate your āmoments.ā Send them to me at greengeezer9@comcast.net. I look forward to hearing from you, and wish you the best Holiday Season ever, and a great 2011!
