Beginning in March, women who participate in select health and wellness programs will be rewarded with a genuine cultured freshwater pearl from Dalzell Jewelers and Centegra Health System to begin building a keepsake necklace.
“Women often overlook taking care of their own health and wellness when they are so busy taking care of others,” said Susan Milford, Centegra Health System’s Vice President of Marketing, Planning and Wellness. “The add-a-pearl program is a way to empower and encourage women to make their health a priority.”
The program, introduced to the attendees at Centegra’s Health Strong Woman Event on Feb. 24, will officially kick-off on March 1. Free colon cancer test kits available
Centegra Health System is proud to join the American Cancer Society in recognizing March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. In the month of March, Centegra will offer free test kits that help to detect the disease.
Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States. Because this cancer does not usually cause symptoms until it is in a more advanced stage, early detection is important in finding, treating and beating this disease. When found early and treated, the survival rate is 90 percent. The American Cancer Society recommends that everyone 50 years and older should begin testing and be tested regularly. People with a family history of the disease should talk to their doctor about testing earlier if younger than 50.
Centegra Health System’s Get Checked! Program will distribute free fecal occult blood kits to check for hidden blood in the stool. The free kits will be available as follows:
— 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14 in the hospital lobby at Centegra Hospital-McHenry
— 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 in the hospital lobby at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock
— 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 16 in the lobby at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center-Crystal Lake
In addition, Centegra will also offer a free physician lecture, “Blueprint to Finding and Fighting Cancer Early” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 9 at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center in Crystal Lake. Dr. Michael Soble, independent oncologist on staff at Centegra Health System, will discuss the need for colorectal screenings as well as screenings and treatment options for other cancer types.
National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month began in 2000 when the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable joined forces to bring about colorectal cancer awareness. Centegra Health System partners with the American Cancer Society to promote this campaign.
