All natural, all organic, slobbers all around

By Brad Wagner

SUN CITY- What’s the difference between a filet mignon steak and a steak burger at a fast food restaurant? The answer is taste due to quality. The human palate can be quite picky at times. This little nugget of information is well known to those who have raised children. Our canine best friends have the same discerning palate that our children and we do.

Stacy Pyrek understood that her pets needed better nutrition than was offered at other pet stores. So she took control of her best friend’s diet and opened Four Legs Pets, a natural dog food store. She opened her first store in 2004 in Algonquin and has been met with such huge success that she recently opened up another location in Gilberts.

Four Legs Pets offers all-natural pet food and some organic pet foods. “Organic [food] is grown without any pesticides … Natural [food] doesn’t have any corn, wheat or soy … [they] are more meat based,” said Pyrek. Other food is often beefed up with fillers. “[Natural food] doesn’t have a lot of fillers or byproducts in it … a lot of the grains are the fillers that the dogs don’t need.”

According to Maldonado J. E., C. Vila, and R. K. Wayne in their paper, “Phylogenetic Relationships, Evolution, and Genetic Diversity of the Domestic Dog,” the closest descendent of today’s dogs would be the grey wolf. “[A meat-based diet] is the closest thing to their natural prey diet,” said Pyrek.

If you have a canine best friend and are interested in providing them with a better quality meal, then it might be time to look into Four Legs Pets.
