Gray in May

By Doug Howison

On July 28, 2009, I knew very little about Brain Tumors.

It wasn’t that I didn’t care, I just wasn’t “AWARE.”

On July 29, I became VERY AWARE, as our beautiful Granddaughter, Hope, was diagnosed with having one of the deadliest brain tumors known to medicine. Namely Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

This cancerous tumor is primarily found in children and kills about 15 of our kids a month. Hope fought the disease for eight months, earning her wings on March 10, 2010 at the age of 12.

These were eight of the most horrendous months of our family’s life. Hope was an answer to our prayers when she came to us from Korea and was adopted by our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. Her loss will always be a tragedy for us all. We will always honor her and miss her, but we want to make certain that her death is not in vain. We MUST RAISE AWARENESS.

Very little research is being done on Pediatric cancer in general, but particularly brain tumors. These kids are not celebrities; they are just our babies. We don’t get the media coverage that adult cancers get, and nowhere near the funds needed for the necessary research.

Please join me in raising awareness. Wear GRAY IN MAY, the color for Brain Tumors. No it’s not the familiar “Pink” that is so prevalent for fighting breast cancer, but certainly as important.

These children could be YOUR grandchildren. Won’t you help?

For more information go to www.thecurestartsnow.org and get the facts. You will also be able to see pictures of the fantastic kids who are currently fighting these diseases and those who have earned their wings in the recent past.

We will “ALWAYS HAVE HOPE IN OUR HEARTS”
