Driving Nails

Yeah, that’s me. Standing on the Eiffel Tower and loving it.

There are 55 guys back in the barracks in Germany wishin’ I was dead.

Why? Well they’re up to their elbows in grunt work: Painting,

refurbishing, polishing, moving beds, mattresses, clothes lockers…making our tired and worn out Munich post come to life once more.

Been dead since the end of the war. In moth balls. And here I am.

Alive, well, and enjoying every minute. Ain’t my fault. The Sergeant Major asked for a volunteer to drive nails for a couple of weeks. I figured driving nails was better than painting, and all the rest of the crap we were havin’ to do, so I volunteered.

None of us knew at the time that “Nails” was the nickname

of the new commanding general of our division.

So here I am. Driving ‘Nails’ and lovin’ it. While he’s stuck in meetings, I’m seeing the sights. Yeah, back at the post, they all wish I was dead or they’re wishin’ they were here instead of me. And I’m sending post cards back to the post saying, “Wish you were here, Love ‘Nails!’”
