Tip 1: What to consider when buying a computer

By My Sunday News

As the first column in a planned series of articles brought to you by the Sun City Huntley (SCH) Computer Club, this is aimed at readers who may be novices or have never had a computer. Numerous topics as well as information for more seasoned users will follow in future articles, and will include listings of free training classes and other services available to all club members.

The first priority when considering a computer purchase is to determine why you need or should even buy a computer. This will require some patience, determination, and possibly some training; if you’re ready read on. You will probably want to use email to exchange letters and pictures with family and friends. You may also want to browse the internet, possibly add software programs for word processing, household budgeting, tax preparation, or hundreds of other interests and uses. Whatever your planned uses, it is important to articulate your objectives.

The next consideration is whether the computer will be used in only one location which lends itself to a stationary “Desktop”. This type of system must add a monitor (viewing screen), a keyboard and a mouse to be complete. However, if you travel or just move about the house, then a portable “Laptop”, self-contained system, may be best. The desktop and the laptop can be either a “PC” (personal computer) produced by many different companies or a “MAC” (made only by Apple Computer, Inc.). Both are fine and offer many different features. On comparison MAC is generally more expensive.

While SCH Computer Club does not recommend any specific product brand or makeup of system components, we do suggest that each person evaluate their own interests, skill level and budget before making a computer-buying decision. When researching the type of computer that best accommodates your objectives, recognize that computer technology is changing faster than ever. The latest designs have huge capacities, advanced components and features that can accommodate the needs of even the most advanced users and will be more expensive, while earlier less expensive models may be sufficient for the needs of most beginners.

If you are buying your first computer today you should plan to spend between $400 and $500. This will buy you either a laptop or a desktop PC with 4GB of memory and at least 320GB of hard disk storage. It also will get a good quality of components. We further suggest that you come into the computer lab at Prairie Lodge, join the club if you are not already a member, and discuss your particular needs with the club’s computer savvy monitors.

Finally, caution should be exercised in purchasing any “extras” since many may not be necessary or are available at no cost. The club’s monitors will also help guide you through these choices. These basic elements and a more comprehensive analysis of selecting a computer will be covered in a free SCH Computer Club three hour presentation this summer. Contact the club for date, time, and more information.
