Historical Society Museum Welcomes Local Quilt Appraiser and Author

By My Sunday News

On Sunday, August 21 between 1 and 4 p.m. the McHenry County Historical Society Museum at 6422 Main Street in Union will offer an afternoon of quilt appraisals by Crystal Lake Quilt Appraiser and Author Sandy Schweitzer. Six privately owned quilts will be examined and discussed by Schweitzer as she provides the audience with information on quilt history and identification clues. Her booklet, ā€œProtecting Your Quilts and Moreā€ is in color and available at the museum for purchase.

The quilt appraisal program is one in a series of special quilting events taking place as part of the three-month Northern Illinois Quilt Fest. As an anchor site for McHenry County events, the historical society is offering a variety of local travel and learning programs through September. Besides the August 21 program, the Museum features a special quilt show in its air-conditioned facility. One of the rarest quilts in the show is a political one dating to 1840 and promoting Presidential Candidate William Henry Harrisonā€™s log cabin campaign. Each of the 33 quilts on display is described in a printed quilt show brochure.

To accommodate the interest in the show, the McHenry County Historical Society Museum will be open every afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. except for Monday. Those coming to Union from the north should note the detour signs for the bridge out on North Union Road. There is a museum admission fee for those who are not members of the historical society. To receive a copy of the other Northern Illinois Quilt Fest activities going on in McHenry county and/or a map of the area barn quilts and quilt gardens, contact the Society by calling 815-923-2267, sending an email to info@mchonline.org or check out the website www.NorthernIllinoisQuiltFest.com.
