With eReader popularity soaring, the Huntley library is meeting demand by expanding the selection and quantity of titles available through their free download service. Amazon’s Kindle eReader, the most popular device, became compatible with the eBooks offered for free at the Huntley Library in October. Kindle owners have joined Nook, iPad, Sony, and other eReader owners in flocking to check out the free library downloads.
“eBook usage has grown by 95% this past year, and that growth will accelerate with Kindle compatibility and the coming of the holiday season,” stated Rosie Lukas, Head of Adult Services. Instead of checking out a physical book, eReader owners can borrow downloadable books from the library free of charge from anywhere they have an Internet connection.
The library’s eBook collection is available via the website MyMediaMall. Huntley Area Public Library cardholders can go to www.mymediamall.net and browse EPUB, PDF and Kindle eBooks. Patrons will find titles by popular authors such as Lee Child, Janet Evanovich, Debbie Macomber, James Patterson, and Nora Roberts.
The library is able to provide access to MyMediaMall as a member of a consortium, which gives the library more purchasing power. “We know the demand for eBooks is only going to grow, and we have planned for that. The collection is growing monthly and we are adding in our own titles in addition to what the consortium buys,” stated Pamela Cardenas, Huntley Library’s eBook librarian. The best part: there are never any overdue charges; the book is automatically returned on its due date.
Classes are held at the library to help people learn how to search titles, place holds, and download selections. Watch the Library Links Newsletter and library website at www.huntleylibrary.org for upcoming classes, special eBook events, and registration information.
