Times change, and people change with them. Almost everywhere you look today, someone is using a personal computer. First introduced in 1975 as a kit, the PC is now over 35 years old. A PC is a machine that, put simply, gathers and processes information and presents it back to its user. Computers let you type letters or write books, organize and keep track of items and lists, perform calculations, display photos, listen to music, play games, interact with other people, and more. Needless to say, when you first look at a computer, because of all the complex components and cables involved, it can appear quite intimidating and mystifying.
Since a computer does so many things, you first need to determine what you want to do on and with it. Do you want to: send and receive emails, work with or share pictures, keep financial records, or just browse or possibly shop on the internet? All of that and much more are possible.
Welcome to the wonderful world of computers. It’s an exciting world, but it can also be a scary place if you enter it alone. As you begin to make your way, the Sun City Computer Club is here to help you conquer your fear and overcome any intimidation by those computers.
Chances are you may have already received or will one day purchase some type of computer. The younger generation loves to gift us older folks with the newest technology to help us navigate and communicate in the 21st century, even though we may know little or nothing about high-tech, or worse yet, we’re not especially interested. So now what do you do?
To begin, recognize that a computer is a simple tool, like a toaster, a TV or a carāthings you already use and enjoy and that make life easier and more fun. If you can operate those devices, you can also handle a computer. Don’t let age stop you either. Millions of folks over 55 now use some form of computer device, even though they once may have thought they never could. Are you ready to join them?
The Sun City Computer Club can help you decide what type of computer may be best for you, explain the various functions of the computer, and demonstrate some of its many features and capabilities.
The Computer Club’s most basic class, āGetting Started with Computers,ā is designed for anyone interested in acquiring basic computer skills and who may have children or grandchildren who already know more about computers than Perdue or Tyson know about chicken.
