Edgewater: Welcome to the Sun Day

By Chris La Pelusa

Dear Edgewater Resident,

Welcome to the Sun Day! What you have before you is an exciting and, most important, beneficial newspaper new to the Edgewater community. The Sun Day offers you news, features, previews, profiles, columns, and other fun, distinctive, and informative editorial content 100% relevant to you and this community. Inside Edgewater’s section The Edge, you will see stories about residents and events that you won’t find in any other news publication.

We encourage you, too, to read the entire newspaper because although the majority of it covers Sun City, most of its content is relevant to and relates to you, your interests, and your lifestyle. Our columns, people profiles, and Health & Wellness section especially go without geographic discrimination. In fact, the Sun Day has a fair readership outside Del Webb communities, who enjoys the general content we feature.

That said, though, you’ll notice that the scale of editorial content is tipped considerably in favor of Sun City. There are a few reasons for this. First, the Sun Day is a very established newspaper in Sun City and has a strong presence. Each week, we process hundreds of pieces of correspondence from simple questions to submissions by Sun City residents. Second, Edgewater is approximately 1/5 the size of Sun City, which means Sun City, in numbers alone, generates more news. However, we want the Edgewater section of the Sun Day to grow and grow, which requires your participation and communication. And, of course, feedback. We love feedback. Especially Sun Day Assistant Managing Editor Mason Souza. Hit him up with as much communication as you’d like! So send us your submissions. Send us your stories. Send us your news.

The Sun Day’s participation in your community provides numerous benefits, as well. Publishing your submissions (seen as ‘newsquicks’ throughout the paper or in our Resident Reporter sections) and through us featuring stories about you and your events, clubs and special interest groups grow and attract larger attendance to special events and shows. This is not to say abandon your communication and submission practices with other publications. Hardly. With the Sun Day, you can increase your communication, especially to those who prefer the read of a newspaper. And, since we’re not an official facet of Pulte or Del Webb properties and are an independent publication, we have no restrictions on the content submitted. We do, however, respect your choice to observe policies, but as an Elgin resident, you are free to communicate with the Sun Day and treat us no differently than you would any of the other news outlets in the area.

(A brief note: any questions regarding editorial content should be directed to the Sun Day, including questions about Sun City/Edgewater content ratios.)

What separates the Sun Day most from other independent publications in your area is that the Sun Day really is YOUR newspaper. Most of our writers (be them reporters or columnists) are Del Webb residents. Even the Sun Day’s advertising representatives are Del Webb residents. This means we approach your community from the inside. Who better to understand the goings-on of a community than the people who live in it?

This said, if you have interest in participating in the Sun Day, please contact us at 847-658-6090 with your ideas because your ideas are how the Sun Day evolved into the newspaper it is today. Not a single column you’ll see in the Sun Day was created by the Sun Day. They were all presented to us by residents or people who have a strong interest in the active adult community.

I’m no stranger to Del Webb communities, either. My parents have lived in Sun City since 2002, and about six years ago, when I was employed by Shaw Suburban Media, I worked as a Huntley reporter and regularly reported on Sun City news.

The fact is that the Sun Day is already a part of the terrific and special lifestyle residents in any Del Webb community enjoy every day, and it’s our sincerest hope that the Sun Day helps broaden that experience. Just think of us as your very own hometown newspaper where on any given edition you might see your friend, family member, or neighbor. Our longstanding motto has always been: If it happens in Sun City, it happens in the Sun Day. We’d now like to extend the very same sentiments to your community: “If it happens in Edgewater, it happens in The Edge.”

Chris La Pelusa
Managing Editor
