Safety tips for your purse, wallet, and credit or debit cards

By My Sunday News

— Make a copy of your current credit and debit cards and note the phone number to report loss or theft. Keep this in a safe place, separate from your credit and debit cards. Update as new cards are issued.

— Carry only the credit or debit cards you need on a daily basis. If your wallet is lost or stolen, reporting the incident is simple when you have just a few credit sources to contact.

— When traveling, make a copy of your driver’s license, passport, and the credit and debit cards in your wallet. Keep the copy in your hotel safe.

When traveling, take a back-up credit card and keep it in your hotel safe. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you’ll have a credit card available to cover your expenses. Use a money belt for carrying larger amounts of cash.

— When refueling your car, pick a station that is well-lit and has video surveillance cameras at the pump. Keep valuables in your vehicle out of plain view. Remove your keys and lock the doors while pumping gas and when going into the station.

— Be wary of purse-snatchers and pickpockets in crowds and when getting off or on a bus, train, elevator, or escalator. On an escalator, keep your purse away from the opposite escalator. When walking, keep your purse away from the street side.

— In restaurants, avoid putting your purse on the floor. A purse hook, placed close enough that you would notice any movement, is suggested. When sitting in a booth, place the hook on your side away from the aisle.
