Huntley Community Radio holds first meeting

By Yazmin Dominguez

HUNTLEY- On June 7, the Huntley Community Radio programming committee held their first meeting at the Cosman Center in Deicke Park.

The meeting was led by HCR executive director Allen Pollack and HCR officer Dorothy Litwin. Program preparation for the new stations was primarily discussed by the committee.

Sixteen volunteers attended the meeting. Volunteers comprise a group of Huntley citizens who have all expressed interest in hosting and producing their own original programs for HCR.

Several solid programming ideas were shared by a few HCR volunteers. One was from Village Trustee Pam Fender. Fender hopes to highlight and give recognition to local citizens for their accomplishments or for good deeds.

“People are doing amazing things every day, but nobody sees that,” Fender said.

Huntley Community Radio officially has a home

The Huntley Park District Board of Commissioners on May 30 officially approved a HPD/HCR licensing agreement that gives HCR sole occupancy of needed office space in the HPD Deicke Park building.

Allen Pollack, HCR Executive Director, received keys to the office space on Friday morning, June 1, and is now working aggressively to acquire office furniture, file cabinets, and office equipment for the station.

If you or someone you know wishes to donate any of the items that HCR is currently seeking, here is a list of needed items: 12 pedestal-type office chairs, a lateral file cabinet, reception desk, and office equipment (e.g. printers, copier). Donors will be acknowledged for their donations in a section on HCR’s Facebook page and website (coming in early July). Note that all donations are fully tax deductible. To donate, contact HCR at huntleyradio-NFP@hotmail.com.

Michael Geheren and Yazmin Dominguez, both Huntley High School students, shared their program idea of broadcasting Huntley High School news, events, and sports updates in a daily half-hour-long program. A special hour-long program broadcasted once a month, highlighting main stories featured in Huntley High School’s newspaper, The Voice, was also proposed.

Sun City resident Jerry Duncan expressed interest in hosting his own program focusing on bluegrass music and its history. Paulette Rusk, also a Huntley and Sun City resident, hopes to have her own cooking program. Rusk plans to broadcast cooking tips, recipes, information on local restaurants, and even historical facts about food.

“I was excited about the number of volunteers and number of potential programs,” Litwin said. “Hopefully they will all become radio producers.”

After the meeting, Pollack offered all volunteers a tour of the future HCR studio and office building, located in Deicke Park. The tour gave volunteers a visual of where they will be working in the future. Both Pollack and Litwin hope to hold their second meeting at the HCR’s new offices and broadcasting center.

Pollack plans to cover Huntley news, weather, and sports on HCR once the station develops. Considering HCR’s early progress, Pollack expressed that he “would love to see a beehive of activity” when searching for volunteers willing to fulfill administrative, promotions, or marketing roles.

Huntley Community Radio will have their social gathering on July 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. All HCR volunteers are invited to attend.
