It is easy to get frustrated and depressed when we contemplate what we are experiencing in our current economy. Gas prices are on the rise again, not only due to the price of oil, but also the cost of ethanol which is produced from corn. Recent estimates state that our food bills will increase an average of $300 per year due to the terrible drought this year. Unemployment still remains high. The cost of medical services continues to rise. It seems like an ever-widening vicious circle of financial despair. Even though the financial markets have recovered a considerable portion of their asset value, the recovery is not sufficient to offset the increased costs. More and more, the conversations we tend to have these days focus on “how can we make ends meet?”
It is difficult to be optimistic and stay positive when the world seems to be coming undone. Added to the economic woes are the societal issues of gangs and increasingly levels of theft. On top of all the worldly issues, our Sun City neighbors have suffered through some traumatic experiences recently. The loss of loved ones and onset of health issues have plagued our neighborhood.
One thing that I have noticed on the positive side is how our Sun City neighborhood has rallied to support one another during these difficult times. I can attest to this first hand. I recently had back surgery and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of encouragement and support from our neighbors. Their thoughts, prayers and well wishes raised my spirits and gave me the comfort I needed to get through the surgery and on the road to recovery.
While the investments we have in 401-K funds may be suffering and the value of our house may have decreased, the value of our friendships with our extended Sun City family have blossomed. The strength of those friendships can weather any storm. Yes, the value of friendship is priceless.
