How to choose the right dog to share your life

By Robin Massey

Are you thinking about bringing in a new four-legged family member to join your family? You may be wondering how to decide if and what dog is right for you. There are many options to consider.

Before even thinking about what breed would be right for you, the items to consider are: Will you have time for a dog? Will you be able to dedicate enough time to train your dog? Exercise your dog? Spend quality time with him/her? Are you in a position in life where you understand bringing a dog into your life is a lifetime commitment for your dog and not a temporary one? Can you financially afford to have a dog?

If you can answer yes to all of the above questions, then maybe you are ready for the responsibility and joy of dog parenting.

When looking for a dog to share your home, ask yourself: Are you an active person or more sedentary? Do you want a younger dog or an older one? Do you want to adopt from a rescue or find a breeder?

In upcoming articles, I will break down each of the questions one should consider when looking for a dog. I will also discuss the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of rescuing a dog from a rescue group or purchasing a dog from a breeder. In the meantime, if a person takes the time to do some insightful research about oneself, evaluate their situation in life, and the type/age of dog they may be interested in sharing their home with, they will be in a much better position for a healthy and happy relationship with a new four-legged family member.
