Recently several Sun City residents have sent well over $600 in money packs and Western Union money orders to cover the “taxes” on their lottery winnings. This is yet another fraudulent way people are losing their money. In one instance, the clerk told the individual it was a scam, however, the resident was insistent on making the purchase. It is good to know that Money Pak cards can be canceled. There is another instance where a Sun City resident was promised a new car, he is out over $8,000 over the course of several months. Please take the time to speak with the residents in your neighborhoods to prevent them falling victim to these scams. Remind them if they never entered the lottery, contest or sweepstakes, they could not possibly be a winner.
I have also been contacted numerous times within the last few weeks about the recent burglary on Cold Springs. Someone has started a rumor that the jewelry was misplaced, therefore no burglary occurred. This is a rumor. The victims in this case lost many pieces of jewelry. I cannot imagine how embarrassed they must feel when this falsehood is being spread throughout Sun City. I do my best to circulate accurate and up to date information about Sun City. In the future, please seek confirmation of fact before passing information along.
There is one final issue. I am very impressed with the number of neighborhoods that are actively participating in neighborhood watch. This great interest and the assistance of many people promoting neighborhood watch has depleted our supply of neighborhood watch signs. There were no funds allocated in the current budget for these signs. Chief Perkins inquired if existing grant funds through the Citizen Corps Council could be applied to this cause. We contacted the State of Illinois and waited some time for a response. Once our request was approved, the process required a request for purchase order, obtaining a purchase order, placing the order, and finally, a delivery time estimated by the supplier of six to eight weeks as of the beginning of September. For those neighborhoods awaiting installation of the signs, I appreciate your patience.
