Stay alert and be attentive! When driving, don’t talk on your cell phone – don’t eat – don’t do anything that might distract you from driving.
Avoid driving when you are tired, angry, or ill.
Look around, behind, and ahead to spot potential hazards. Check your rear- and side-view mirrors frequently. Look at least a block ahead in urban areas and a quarter mile ahead in suburban or rural areas.
Communicate with other drivers by using your turn signals properly. Avoid driving in someone else’s blind spot.
Keep a safe distance from other vehicles. If you encounter an angry driver, avoid eye contact and give him room to pass.
Maintain a steady and consistent speed appropriate to speed limits, speed minimums, the normal speed of traffic, and current road or weather conditions.
During rain or fog, turn on your low beam headlights to help others see you.
Keep your windshield wiper blades in good condition.
Stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Remember that it is illegal to use your cell phone in a school or construction area.
