Songs of Italy to spice up Drendel Ballroom

By Mason Souza

SUN CITY – If music can take people places, those in Drendel Ballroom on Nov. 2 may step out to find themselves in a Tuscan garden, or an old tavern in Little Italy.

At the very least, audience members may pick up on a few Italian words after hearing Tony Spavone sing to them that night.

Born in Naples, Chicago-based Spavone wears many hats: he performs old standards like “The Way You Look Tonight,” as well as a number of Italian songs, as heard on his albums “Core N’ Grato” and “Canta Napoli.” He’s an entertainer in the classic sense, with a knack for working a crowd.

If that weren’t enough, he’s also a restaurateur, having opened Tony Spavone’s in Bloomingdale. The restaurant is an Italian kitchen serving up favorites like eggplant parmigiana and gnocci. Spavone is a frequent presence at his restaurant, entertaining guests with his songs and inviting others to sing.

Spavone has already established himself as a favorite in Sun City, particularly among members of the Italian American Club, who have visited Spavone’s restaurant for dinners and invited him to sing at their gatherings.

On November 11, all of Sun City (and outside residents) will get a chance to hear a modern day crooner with a classically trained voice and perhaps leave with a craving for fettucini alfredo.
