LAKE IN THE HILLS – Hannah Martin Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help their 3rd to 5th graders with their reading comprehension. Hannah Martin is a pilot school for the 1:1 initiative that involves students using tablets to read most of their schoolwork. Matt Webster became assistant principal at Hannah Martin last year and taught 1st and 2nd grade for six years.
“The implementation plan in the district will include all elementary schools by the fall of 2014. Martin Elementary was chosen as the initial school in this process because the teaching and support staff have a strong and collaborative history [which focuses on] keeping student achievement the major priority. The 1:1 initiative requires a positive attitude and a willingness to support one another…. The team at Martin has met those expectations,” Webster said.

ll remains the same: that is, a caring adult can inspire and positively impact our youth,” said Webster.
Volunteers would help students for about one hour any day Monday through Friday. There are three different time slots available: 9–10 a.m., 11am–noon, or 1–2pm.
“There is probably nothing more rewarding than to work with students to enhance their reading skills and watch the progress that they make simply by having a little extra help once a week from someone who cares. We are hopeful that members of our community will reach out as they have for many years and share a little bit of their time making a difference for our students,” Eileen Delahanty, volunteer coordinator for District 158, said.
