Senior pet care, part 3

By Robin Massey

I have often been asked about senior dogs, “How do you know when it’s time to let your dog go?” That is such a difficult question. As with everything else, the answer varies for everyone. It is a question only you can answer.
When trying to make this very difficult decision, asking yourself certain questions may help you come to a peaceful resolution. For whose benefit are you keeping your dog alive for, yours or theirs? What is your dog’s quality of life? Is your dog in chronic pain? Does your dog consistently soil himself when he was an otherwise clean dog before? Has your vet told you things are only going to get worse? Does your dog no longer enjoy the normal activities of life?
When my dogs and I have come to this juncture in their lives, I often look into their eyes as an indicator. I ask myself, “Has the life left their eyes?” It’s the saddest thing in the world, but when the look is gone, I know it’s time. They have given me so many years of unconditional love and enjoyment that I know it’s now my responsibility to let them go in the most peaceful and loving way possible.
If you make the decision to euthanize, call your vet and talk to them about your options, like burials, memorials, and other touches surrounding the passing of your friend. Some vets will come to your home so your dog can go to sleep peacefully in their own surroundings with their family by their side.
However you chose to let your friend go, even though it may be very painful for you to watch them leave this world, please try to stay with them until they leave. If you think it’s hard for you, think about how hard it would be for them to leave without your being with them at that critical point. You owe it to them to be there. If you need some comforting words, please look up the poem, “The Rainbow Bridge.” You will see your beloved again.
