Lessons learned in Florida

By Norma Thompson

When I left Huntley for my home in Florida last October, I made the decision not to teach my February classes but to have fun with all the people in our Christian R.V. Park going to Bible conferences, enjoying the sun and warm weather, relaxing by the pool, taking trips and socializing, which usually meant eating mostly health-destroyers such as sugar and processed items with little or no nutrition.

In previous years it seemed that I came back to Del Webb recovering from the flu, blood pressure problems, and excessive weight gain. I told myself that this year was to be an exception. I was going to live a different lifestyle. This involved making my own meals and staying away from functions where food or snacks were served that were contrary to my beliefs and teaching.

In addition, I joined a fitness club and worked with a personal trainer two times a week for three months. I continued to go to the gym, walk in the pool, ride my bicycle, and use my rebounder.

Were my endeavors successful? Early on, I had difficulty because when I saw others eat things my body did not need, my addictions took over. One of our Bible conference pastors preached a whole week on the book of James about handling trials and temptations. I wrote some verses on note cards and used them in weak moments. Something else that helped was noting all the illness and degenerative disease on campus and realizing our lifestyle had everything to do with choosing between disease and health.

I learned much this winter and have returned home ready to teach “A Healthier You” with vigor and passion. Unlike the government trying to pass a law on the size of soft drinks, I realize God gives people free will to make their own choices whether to be healthy or not.
