Is saturated fat our enemy? Part II

By Norma Thompson

Last week we talked about how cholesterol and saturated fat are still blamed today for obesity, heart disease, strokes, and a myriad of other problems by the medical institutions and encouraged by the companies who package our food.

A year ago I wrote about statin drugs, their many side effects, and the fact they lowered cholesterol in the body to dangerous levels. It is necessary that we review why cholesterol is important for health and why seniors should have levels from 220 to 250 in their blood. It is vital to have these levels by eating good quality fats and foods with cholesterol.

Every cell in the body is made up of cholesterol. Without it you would die. The brain needs it to prevent neurological diseases that are so prevalent today. People who eat more saturated fat and cholesterol seem to have fewer strokes. It is needed for hormonal health.

The fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K cannot be absorbed without it. We cannot use vitamin D from the sun without cholesterol or fat; therefore we become prone to osteoporosis and bone fractures when we fall.

Bile salts, required for the digestion of fats, are made from cholesterol. Cholesterol protects the immune system against cancer and aging. It is a friend, not an enemy!

By eliminating much needed saturated fat and cholesterol foods from the diet, we are heading for more obesity, producing multiple deĀ¬generative diseases, wrinkling, and aging at a rapid rate.
