Q&A with the Woodchucks

By The Woodchucks

Question: Where can I get the rollers for sliding screen doors? I have a Dearborn model, if that makes a difference. I have tried the usual places: Ace, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Menard’s and cannot find the exact roller assembly needed. I have also tried to clean them, but this has little to no impact.

Answer: The rollers you are looking for are available from a company called Prime-Line. The installation of these rollers is a little tricky, but Prime-line has made a video to show you exactly how to do it. Here is a link to the video.

After watching the video, go to the Prime-line website and find the roller you need. They have a list of places to buy their hardware.

Question: I really enjoy the fix-it articles you publish in the Sun Day, and I normally try to save the articles for future reference. However, I failed to save the ones on fixing door bells and on repairing faucets, especially outside sillcocks. Could you please send me these two articles or tell me where I might be able to get the information?

Answer: You don’t need to save the articles; we already do that for you. They are all on the Sun Day’s website at www.mysundaynews.com under the Columnists’ tab. Scroll down to “Ask the Woodchucks” and find the articles you want.

Question: Can you help me find the correct capacitor size for a York unit if I email you the serial number? Unit is circa 1995. Dishonest repairman took old one and never came back.

Answer: You will probably want an air conditioner repairman to install the capacitor, and he will know the correct one to use. If you want to install it yourself, enter the manufacturer and the model number into Google search and ask for the compressor capacitor number. You should find a capacitor with a rating of 35 – 50 microfarads and 370 V.

Question: I bought a resale home with an electric range. I bought a gas range to replace it, and when I explained that there is a gas connection in the range area, they asked if there was a shut off valve. I looked this morning but do not see a lever to shut the gas off so the new range can be hooked up. There is just a cap on the pipe.

I find two gas shut offs in the laundry room, but I assume they are for the furnace and water heater. Do you know what I have to do in order to connect a gas range in my kitchen? If so, what type of serviceman do I need to get to do the job for me? Thanks for any assistance you give me.

Answer: In Huntley, the code when all of the houses were built in Sun City required a shut off valve for all appliance connections, so unless someone removed it, there is a shut off valve. I’m sure if you look there is a shut off valve with a red handle. Any appliance repair service man should be able to install your gas range. There is a requirement that when a range is connected to the gas line, a new flexible connecting tube be used. It is not permissible to reuse these tubes.
