Finding a lost chain and more on driveway maintenance

By The Woodchucks

Q. Twelve years ago when I moved into my Mackinac model house here in Sun City, I lost a favorite gold chain with my name on it. I laid it down on the left counter next to the sink in my master bathroom, and it fell down in the space between counter and sink. I hadn’t noticed this space before until I saw my chain disappearing, but I couldn’t grab it in time.

Since then we have worked to get it by making (drilling) a square opening (hole) down below in the vanity under the sink (in the side wood wall). We tried to get something down below to reach the chain. The hole was drilled before I could tell my son that it should be more towards the front than the back wall. We have been unable to retrieve it, and I would like to have it back.

Do any of you have any suggestions, and would someone please come to work on it and help me?

A. At the bottom of your cabinets there is a panel about four inches high called the kick plate. It is usually painted black and is a thin panel made of a composite material like Masonite or plywood. This panel is nailed on and can be easily pried off. With this panel removed you will see under your cabinets, and if you look carefully, you should see your gold chain.

Q. Tip 24 Driveway Maintenance. I have done this maintenance in the past and need to do it again this year. My question is this: I will be gone from Sept. 18 until Nov. 1.

Should I do this before I leave or wait until I return? My concern is will it be too cold if I wait until November.

A. This question refers to a column that was published 55 issues ago, explaining how to seal the gap between the driveway and the concrete garage pad and between the driveway and the concrete sidewalk. (All earlier columns are available on the mysundaynews.com in case you need to review how perform this maintenance.) The gallon container of blacktop crack sealer recommends that it be applied at temperatures above 50°F. Whether you will have temperatures above 50°F in November are beyond the scope of this column.

This question was sent two days before the last issue of the Sun Day. My deadline is seven days before an issue, therefore the answer could not be published before you left, but it may help others.
