EDGEWATER – The straw men (and women) standing outside Creekside Lodge for the past couple of weeks were not doing a very good job of stopping anyone from coming inside.
What they did well, however, was to draw in visitors with warm autumn welcome.
Edgewater resident Fred Miller came up with the idea to feature scarecrows outside Creekside Lodge to kickoff the fall season. He presented it before a Social Planners Committee meeting and the idea took off.
Many scarecrows reflected the activities and spirit of the group or individuals that created them. The Creekside Cookers’ scarecrow, designed by former club vice president Barb Bork and volunteers, carried grapes, bread, and other culinary items.
An old skeleton figure provided a frame to build on, and Bork added a burlap sack and sunflower eyes to complete the autumn ensemble.
The scarecrow made by the Chapter One Book Club sat comfortably on a chair, ready to dig into an engaging novel.
Not all scarecrows had a group theme, however, and some went for laughs over spooks. “Tricksie the Scare-Ho” was one example. With her bikini figure t-shirt, she may have been better suited to a summer theme but proved to be a popular figure nonetheless.
In fact, Tricksie inspired Bork – who scrapped her first scarecrow in fear it might have been too scary – to try something a little more “risqué” next year.
Cookers President Rosalie Bozan said the scarecrows – one featuring Mickey Mouse in particular – were a big hit with her granddaughter.
“I think it reflects the holidays starting; I mean harvest time is when you start thinking about the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and you start out with Halloween and scarecrows and pumpkins so this really was a nice introduction,” Bozan said.
