New personnel come to First Service staff, SC board

By Dwight Esau

SUN CITY – Personnel changes have taken center stage in Sun City’s First Service Residential staff as the year 2013 winds down.

In the past month, a new member has been elected to the Sun City Community Association Board of Directors, and a new executive director, two new staff directors, and a new administrative assistant have been hired.

In January, nine-year resident Bill Ziletti returns to the seven-member governing board after a year’s absence, replacing Gerald Kirschner. On Nov. 18, Lauren Lee assumed the position of First Service Residential staff executive director. She comes to Sun City from a similar position at Westbrook Village, a retirement community in Peoria, Arizona. She succeeds Bill Pennock, who left as executive director in September. Dave Osborn, who served as interim executive director, returns to his previous position as facility maintenance director.

Jackie Shireman was named to the new position of director of fitness. This function has been spun off from the Lifestyles Department into a separate department. Shireman recently told the Sun Day that she plans to take fitness services to the residents, instead of offering them at the fitness centers in Prairie and Meadow View lodges.

β€œWe need to expand the emphasis on fitness in Sun City,” she said. β€œWe would like to help softball players, tennis players, and even golfers to warm up before they start competing. We plan to be out in the community’s various venues much more.”

Shireman was a personal trainer for seven years at Sun City. Previously, she worked as a personal trainer at Healthbridge Fitness Center in Crystal Lake, where she is a resident.

Beth Fudala has been promoted to the position of director of governance and standards, replacing Robin Longnecker, who worked in that position for three years. A frenetic highlight of Fudala’s new assignment this fall was overseeing the processing of more than 600 applications by Sun City residents to replace roofs and other exterior facilities on their homes after a severe hailstorm in July.

A resident of Sleepy Hollow and a native of Chicago, Fudala was community standards advisor for about a year after joining the First Service Residential staff in July of 2012.

The governance and standards department is responsible for administering Sun City’s standards and regulations regarding modifications to the exterior of residents’ homes, including paint colors, landscaping, patios, decks, pergolas, as well as signage guidelines throughout the community.

β€œWe have processed more than 1,700 modification requests this year with a three-person staff,” she said. β€œThat’s including the 600 roof repair applications. In 2012, we handled more than 1,050 modification requests. We also review and advise on contracts and insurance matters.”

Fudala also is staff liaison to the covenants and compliance committee, the neighborhood advisory committee, the insurance sub-committee, and the Neighborhood Watch program.

Fudala is now interviewing candidates to fill the open position of community standards advisor.

Previously, Fudala worked in the commodities industry, operated several home-based businesses, and worked in financial services.

β€œI was a good friend of Jane Tennant, a former employee here, who recommended me for a job in Sun City,” she said.

Finally, at the Nov. 13 association board of directors meeting, Lifestyles Director Cynthia O’Connor introduced Linda Campbell as the department’s new administrative assistant, replacing Jennifer Nordstrom.
