Sun City Bridge Club plays a great hand with donations
A $6,000 donation was made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank from the ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) unit 239, and in addition, $2,100 was donated to the Grafton Food Pantry collected through the Sun City Bridge Club by our club member Mary Belcher.

The Sun City Huntley bridge club offers games for all levels of bridge players. It begins with fun bridge on Tuesday morning, Chicago-style bridge on Tuesday evening, contract bridge on Wednesday afternoon, duplicate bridge on Monday evening, Friday afternoon, and our ACBL game on Saturday morning. There are over 250 members in our club. All games are played in the multi-purpose room of Prairie Lodge.

If you have questions or are interested in joining our club, call: Ron Hopman at 847-659-1780, ACBL board member and director of Saturday(ACBL) game.

The Sun City Bridge Club is playing bridge on Sunday, and they are playing a lot of it – from a game of social bridge to a more advanced game. However, the great thing is it’s open to everyone to enjoy. Besides Sun City, there are weekly club games held in Elgin, Rockford, Aurora, St Charles, Crystal Lake, and throughout these United States. Frequently they will hold a charity game, and each player will contribute an extra dollar. This extra money is collected and can be immediately donated to a local charity or held and become part of a larger donation. Thus the $6,000 donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

This is the second $6,000 donation in the past three years. The slightly more advanced bridge games are referred to as an “ACBL sanctioned game”. Residents of Sun City are very fortunate. At the lodge, every Saturday at 12:30, a sanctioned game is held. Players perfect their game while good fellowship travels from one card table to the next. Resident Dave Germaine is a ACBL Certified teacher and is always ready to start another round of lessons.

Dave is recognized as one of the area’s finest teachers. If you want to learn how to play the game or learn some of the finer points, Dave is the person to contact. To hold a sanctioned game you must have an accredited ACBL Director.

Caralee Hopman (with the assistance of her husband Ron) have been running a game on the first and third Saturday of every month for several years. In recent weeks, several new directors have been tested, and for this reason, they are now prepared to hold a game every Saturday. Bridge is probably one of the finest card games available ¬– why don’t you call Dave and get involved? Oh yes, for a side note – good treats are also offered.
