The whole concept of dieting is wrong. It implies going on some kind of restrictive menu plan, usually low in calories and fat, remaining on it until one loses a specified number of pounds on the scales, reaching ideal weight, getting tired or bored with the diet or chomping at the bit for all the forbidden goodies.
Generally, one gains all of the weight back and continues a yo-yo, up-and-down experience for life with more pounds added than from the start. Part of the vicious cycle includes daily or more trips to the scales to weigh ourselves. Lost pounds simply show water gains and losses, not fat loss. If we havenāt lost, we cut back more on calories or eat things we should not because we are not losing anyway.
The word ādietā generally implies something done temporarily and often spelling defeat. Then we go back to our old eating habits. In disgust, we diet again and perhaps choose a new plan promising more success.
People eat for all kinds of reasons. Some of these are:
Taste, sight, and smell
Eat without thinking (habit)
Lack of discipline
Business and not taking time to plan meals
Convenience of packaged foods
Social reasons (people get together for fellowship and to celebrate special occasions)
Addiction to sugar and starches
Emotional reasons such as loneliness, boredom, comfort, and life problems
If we are to solve the problem of obesity and to experience good health, we must be willing to tackle the above first. Then we can move on to knowing the truth as to what puts fat on our bodies. Next time we will study lack of knowledge.
