Pianos to duel in Sun City on April 10

By Andy Steckling

SUN CITY – There is no “Felix” in the dueling piano group Felix and Fingers…not technically.

Mike Potts and Dave Redford, who co-founded the group, decided at one of their first gigs that it would be cool to have stage names.
Mike wanted to be named “Fingers.”

Dave thought “Felix” would suit him.

The group was born – and now, even though the two still perform, a total of seven members compose the group Felix and Fingers.

The dueling piano group will make its way to Sun City on Thursday, April 10 and will play in Drendel Ballroom from 7 to 9 p.m.

The show is all-request, and all sing-along, featuring everything from Frank Sinatra tunes to the piano standards of Billy Joel to today’s Top 40 hits – group member Mike Sherman cannot begin to mention how many times Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” has been played in the past month.

“There’s also a huge comedy element to the show,” he said. “A lot of this involves getting our audiences to do silly things. We have a number of games that involve anything from teaching them hand motions to a song, to getting a couple of them competing in a cowbell competition.”

The group has even performed renditions of Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop,” and Ylvis’ “What Does the Fox Say?”

“We love getting silly requests that people don’t expect us to be able to do,” Sherman said.

While Sherman cannot recall if the group has ever played in Sun City, several of the current members are based in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and have played all over the Midwest.

Shows are treated as an individual performance, and the group shapes the set list to reflect who the audience is. The main point, Sherman said, is “everyone leaves smiling.”

Pianos aren’t the only instrument in the show. Sherman said the group has members who play the saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and even the didgeridoo. He did not mention if all instruments would be used during the show.
