Coyotes are similar in appearance to some domestic dogs, but they are set apart by their pointed nose and bushy tail.
Over time, some coyotes have grown used to humans and urban/suburban environments. Pets should be watched and placed in safe areas when coyotes are a known problem.
Coyote safety tips:
β Keep garbage stored securely. Coyotes seek rodents found in garbage.
β Clean up any leftover pet/bird food outdoors daily.
β Use squirrel-proof bird feeders. Squirrels that visit bird-feeders become easy prey for coyotes.
β Alert residents of the neighborhood and the local municipality (e.g., police safety officer) as soon as a problem develops with a coyote.
β Do not feed coyotes. They are wild animals, not pets.
