Encore Chamber Orchestra performance promises to strike the right chord

By Andy Steckling

SUN CITY – To say Phyllis Allen and the members of the Encore Chamber Orchestra of Sun City are anticipating their concert on Aug. 3 is an understatement.

“We are all very excited. We’ve worked very hard, with much more difficult music that we’ve played in the past,” said Allen, who plays the bassoon for the 20-piece group.

Starting in 2005 with about five people, mostly all strings, the group has grown to its present size and now includes several wind instruments, such as the oboe, bassoon, French horn and flute, and several more string instruments, including two violas.

The group is under the helm of Betty Kamps, a professional director and clarinet player with the band.

Their show on Aug. 3, with a start time of 2 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom, promises to bring a variety of music. Allen said the group mainly focuses on classical pieces (such as Handel, Beethoven, and Mozart) but that there will also be several popular pieces. She doesn’t reveal specifically what will be played, since she wishes to keep some of the magic in the performance.

However, she reveals that one of the group’s violinists, who is from Ireland, will sing “Danny Boy” and “Loch Lomond,” accompanied by the orchestra.

This performance also marks the first time the orchestra is selling tickets. Those are currently available at the CAM desk to Sun City residents for $8. Those looking to attend the performance from out of town will have to pay $13 in advance, with an additional $5 on the day of the event.

Though they remain excited, Allen said the orchestra is looking forward to performing for the anticipated 100-plus people in attendance.

The group itself will be seated on the floor, “so it’s intimate and the chairs will also be on the floor,” said Allen.

“We’re going to be playing some beautiful music. This group is just so excited [to be playing] because of the added instrumentation in the last year. It’s a nice, full sound that we’re making, and we never know where that will take us,” she added.
