Sound bites on current Sun City issues

By Dwight Esau

The news from Sun City’s community association these days may not be resoundingly exciting, but it is productive.

At the last association board of directors meeting, residents, administrators, and policy-makers talked about nearly a dozen projects and situations. It’s a busy summer of 2014 in Sun City-land. The decision on July 30 to continue with First Service Residential as the community’s management company is being covered elsewhere in the Sun Day.

Here is the latest in the Sun Day’s series of roundups about what’s going on. As usual, sound bites only.

The multi-purpose, or card, room in Prairie Lodge is getting a makeover. The project includes new furniture, carpeting, and wall and window decorating. This room is one of the most extensively used spaces in either of the lodges. Timetable for the job has not been set.

Speaking of makeovers, the Prairie Lodge’s indoor pool will be closed Aug. 18-29 while it is re-plastered after about 15 years of daily use.

A simplified treasurer’s report was distributed by board member Bill Bendick. He said it continues to show favorable trends in association finances. As of June 30, year-to-date revenue was down slightly below budget, but expenses were below budget by a greater amount. There were 142 home sales for the first six months of 2014, compared to 146 last year in the same period. Reserves totaled $5.4 million, above the target for the period by about $300,000.

A Centegra Medical Group representative said that the new immediate care center in Prairie Lodge will be open by the end of August. The new facility, located next to the fitness center, will significantly expand Centegra’s service to include treatments for a variety of minor traumas and illnesses.

The $10 fee for club use of the Fountain View Center kitchen has been waived by the board. This action applies only to events involving Sun City residents.

On the flip side, the board voted 5-2 against a request from the Neighborhood Advisory Council to waive printing costs for inserts in Lifestyle magazines. One resident responded to this by offering to supply the paper for her neighborhood’s insert.

Board member Ralph Bergstrom asked the staff to explore the possibility of upgrading the parking area next to the comfort station at the south end of Wildflower Lake.

Work on resurfacing and upgrading of Del Webb Boulevard from Route 47 to Eakin Creek Court next to Prairie Lodge will start in the next few days. The upgrade of the Main Street bridge over the Kishwaukee River has been completed, and Main Street has been reopened.

The staff continues to talk to the engineering firm and contractor to correct flaws in the recent resurfacing of the Prairie Lodge parking lot.

A request for a dog park in Sun City was made again by a resident. The board referred this topic to the Huntley Park District or the village.
