Ask an Angel: September 11, 2014

By Arlene Petersen

Q. Every time I go to the doctor, I feel rushed and it seems like I don’t have his full attention. Is it just me?

A. I have heard this same observations from others. The visit seems to be overruled by the notes the doctor has to input in their computers and files, and it makes one wonder if they are really “present.” Everyone’s time is important, so I have learned that keeping a journal and bringing it with me to all my doctor visits is the one thing that really helps me during my appointments. I have dedicated a journal for all my visits. When I meet with the doctor, I have questions written in the journal ahead of time, so I don’t forget what to ask. I also make sure my current medications are listed in the journal. The staff asks me about my meds as soon as I get settled in the exam room. I write down anything that is important to me, like my blood pressure in the journal as well. I keep the journal in a specific place so that I have it handy and ready to take with me any time I have an appointment.

The things I write in my journal are not only questions I have, but any symptoms I feel that would be important to communicate. The doctor appreciates hearing those specifics, and it helps me as well. It’s especially important to write things down because, quite frankly, sometimes our memory isn’t reliable! If I get new medications, I write down the medication and what it is for. I write down his verbal instructions in my journal as well. Sometimes what is on the prescription bottle varies just a bit from what he has told me in the visit. It can get confusing.

If you don’t understand something he has explained, ask! There have been times when I’ve felt too shy to ask questions. In the end, it only created confusion for me and then found myself calling the office, getting frustrated. Speak up during your appointment. That is the best time to ask questions.
