Sept. 11, 2001, happened 13 years ago. It was something I’ll never forget, but it was 13 years ago and we do tend not to remember. Well that was exactly what Sun City residents, Margaret (Peg) Mulhall, Linda Bahwell, and Catherine Portera will not let happen. On Sept. 11, 2011, they created the first 9-11 American Flag Memorial event with help from friends. It was tremendous undertaking with taps being played at the same time the planes hit the Twin Towers.
They continued doing a smaller version in 2012 and 2013. This year, they called me at Huntley Radio to ask if we could help them by broadcasting a reminder to our listeners to join them in this Anniversary of the 9-ll terrorist attack on our country. On Monday, September 8 at 9 a.m. at the Pavilion, the Sun City Marines will Present the Colors followed by the placing of 2,976 flags in memory of each victim who died that day. Lights will illuminate the flags all night.
On Thursday, September 11, TAPS will be played again at sunset; a candlelight and prayer vigil will follow. Bring your own candle or purchase one at the event. The Marines will retire the Colors on Sep. 12 at 9 a.m. and the flags will be removed, thanks to all the volunteers.
Everyone is welcome or visit the site anytime as a remembrance of this monumental time in our country’s history.
As Huntley Radio is moving forward as an FM station, helping the community remember important events will always be part of our mission.
