When my husband and I bought our home in Sun City over 15 years ago, we knew it was a community for the ACTIVE ADULT as it said it in it’s name. That has not changed.
If we could not take care of ourselves we would have looked for a community that would have met our needs. We also knew that when the time came when neither of us could drive, we would sell our home and move to a community that could serve our needs, as many of our friends have done in the past few years. Till that time comes, if needed, we could use one of the food delivery services such as Pea Pod and use a car service for other things when necessary.
If one of our friends offered to help, we would buy them a tank full of gas and perhaps take them to dinner as we know they could be doing other things with their time and not be spending their gas money on us.
Having a car is a large expense. Gas has been costing a lot, sometimes $40 to fill up the tank that needs refilling the following week, insurance and repair and upkeep on a car is expensive.
Most of us are living on limited income. If Sun City were to pay for bus service as stated in Marion Lorenzin’s Hang Your Hat letter in the December 4 edition, all the rest of us would be paying for it, an expense we did not expect when we moved here. Our taxes are astronomical.
Yes, it would be nice if Pace provided bus service here as we do pay high taxes to Kane and McHenry Counties and perhaps we should find out why it doesn’t provide that service and, if need be, get a law firm to sue them for what other residents of the counties get. Until then, people who do not have cars, for whatever reason, should be happy for the kindness of those who give generously of their time and money to help those who don’t drive.
