Q. I like to go for walks, but this season has been a challenge for me. I don’t feel motivated to exercise in my home. How can I stay active without going stir crazy?
A. Getting motivated to exercise at any time is a challenge. Good for you that you are an active walker and, at the same time, are aware of the safety issues when it comes to winter walking.
Remaining active in your own home is very important. Some simple things you can do is get an exercise buddy. If you have a friend who also likes to stay active, set a schedule where you can get together and do some simple exercises at home. There are programs available on television or, if you want a dedicated program, think about using a video that addresses your exercise goals.
If you are a “techie,” you can even use some of the video games out there that are somewhat interactive. You can have a lot of fun, no matter what you choose to do. If you live near a mall, a walking routine at the mall is a good way to get out of the house and put physical activity in your routine. Some communities have walking clubs through their park districts or through the mall.
Investigate your options. Your buddy can help you stay accountable, and it will also give you incentive to stay physical. Check with your doctor before beginning or even changing your exercise program. Safety first!
