Ask the Woodchucks: April 9, 2015

By The Woodchucks

Question: I live in an original Del Webb-built home, and I can hear mice when they occasionally crawl up the siding and get into the attic. Do you have any solutions to prevent this from happening? Some of my neighbors have the same problem.

Answer: That is a very familiar problem to me. Before we moved to Sun City, we lived in a house in the woods. Every fall the mice would move into our house and migrate upward to the attic. I would start setting mouse traps in the attic at the end of September. I would discard the dead mice several times a week until I stopped catching them in four to six weeks. My mice liked peanut butter and peanuts, but I had a neighbor who used cheese.

Do not use poison. It will kill the mice but they will die in the walls or in the attic and it will take over a month for the odor to dissipate.

Question: We are new owners in Sun City and are considering adding pavers to our patio and driveway ribbons and replacing our asphalt driveway that has sunk by the curb and has numerous cracks. It does not appear that the driveways were properly installed. Could you provide names of pavers and asphalt companies that others have used and were satisfied with the results?

Answer: You really need to schedule a meeting with the Governance and Standards department to make sure your changes are in compliance and that you have the proper permissions. You should also read the appropriate section of the Design Guidelines to better understand what is allowed. (You will have to do a little searching as the page numbers on the table of contents are wrong.) You can find the guidelines on the Sun City website www.SCCAH.com. After signing in, click on “Association Management” then click on Governance and Standards. You will find the Design Guidelines link at the bottom of their page.
