Q. My husband has fallen several times now while out for a walk. He was clearly shook up! Thankfully, he didn’t break any bones, but I am so nervous now. I am thrilled he is exercising, but every time he goes out, I am a wreck. Do you have any suggestions to help keep him safe and me sane?
A. There are many things you can do to reduce the risk of falling, especially while out for a walk. A walking stick or cane is highly recommended. Each offers stability and there are many types available.
A physical therapist can help with what size is best, so I recommend talking with your doctor about it. Don’t let vanity stand in the way. The benefits are much greater than landing in the hospital. If a cane or walking stick is not suitable, a walker may be a better choice. It’s all about safety.
The walker will enable your husband to maintain his exercise routine and that will add to his overall health. I also recommend a good, rubber-soled shoe. Make sure the shoes fit well and are properly tied. Walk on level surfaces, and if you live near a mall, it might make sense to join the mall walkers, who walk during off hours so as to avoid the crowds.
Walking the mall is especially nice when it is rainy or wet outside. Those slippery outdoor surfaces can be risky for walkers. Finally, if he has a cell phone, make sure he keeps it with him during his walks. I know some folks keep it with them, but don’t turn it on. Big mistake!
Make sure the phone is turned on and the ringer volume is on as well. If worry gets the best of you, he will only be a quick phone call away. I hope just implementing a few of these tips will reduce your stress and help reduce his risk.
