I wish to thank the Sun City residents for re-electing me to a new 4-year term. I will continue to work with the village manager, the other trustees, and the village president to improve the quality of life in Huntley.

I’d like to thank my unknown neighbor who places my newspaper next to my garage each morning.

Rutland and Grafton residents pay 90 percent of their taxes to the same taxing districts. The two townships are, however, subjected to two different assessors. Because of this peculiar setups, weird results do frequently happen.

This year, Rutland residents are subject to a correction due to earlier assessment errors. We are told that in the previous two years we were assessed too low. So, this year is a “catchup” year and our taxes will increase because of this. A consequence is that Grafton residents will pay less.

Now, this seems fair: correcting a previous mistake. However, four years ago we were faced with an opposite situation. Because of errors of the Grafton assessor, Rutland saw its taxes increase 14% on the average, with Grafton residents benefitting by getting decreases. Rutland residents complained loudly. We were told things would be adjusted and they would get back the excess they paid.

This never happened. The next year taxes did have a proper relationship between the two townships, but the excess that was to be returned never found its way back to Rutland.

The taxing bodies obviously lack consistency. I have pointed this out to the powers that be, but have yet to receive a meaningful response.
