This film won’t steer audiences ‘far from the madding crowd’

By Tom Sansom

Madding

Based on Thomas Hardy’s renowned novel, the British drama “Far From the Maddening Crowd” focuses on Bathsheba Everdene, a beautiful young woman who inherits a picturesque farm from her Uncle. Screenwriter David Nicholls and director Thomas Vinterberg combine to bring us a bigger than life version of this timeless tale. Carey Mulligan stars as the willful young woman, and gives us an Oscar-worthy performance.

The story is set in the English countryside, in the 1870’s, where the independent and headstrong Bathsheba is determined to manage the farm by herself, with all the trials and tribulations that go with it. To add to the complexity, she attracts three very different suitors, all vying for her hand in marriage. Sheep farmer Gabriel Oak, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, Frank Troy, a professional soldier, played by Tom Sturridge, and William Boldwood a prosperous and mature bachelor played by Michael Sheen. The three men are all diametrically opposed to each other providing Bathsheba with options galore, provided she is interested.

This story of her choices and passions, all tempered by her life running the farm, explores the nature of relationships and love, as well as the quality we all admire, the human ability to overcome obstacles through perseverance and resilience.

The production design, set decoration, costume design and photography all contributed significantly to the enjoyment of this movie. The panoramic views of the English countryside, to say nothing of the scenes in and around the farm and various homes, are all exceptional, and add significant value to an already marvelous story. Kudos to all of those involved, especially Charlotte Bruus for the cinematography.

Far From the Maddening Crowd

As you might imagine a story like this will have twists and turns, one of them early on will catch you off guard, and probably shock you as it did me and the rest of the audience. That will only lead to more surprises, action, and some adventure as the story progresses. Needless to say as the suitors cross paths time and again, there is inevitable conflict resulting in unexpected surprises and unintended consequences.

There are a number of well- acted and memorable scenes between Bathsheba and her various suitors, to say nothing of the farm crew who work for her. All in all a large group of talented British players, giving us a great evening’s entertainment. If I had one minor concern, there are a handful of moments when the British accents will put a strain on the understanding, but they are limited and far between.

If you enjoy a great drama with plenty of surprises, combined with fine acting, give this one a try. I am sure you will be glad you did. If this isn’t your cup of tea, Mad Max will probably be showing in the theatre next door.

By the way, does anyone else notice the similarity in Bathsheba’s last name to another female heroine of recent vintage?
