The faces behind the airwaves

By Dorothy Litwin

How does the station get on the air?

It isn’t by magic! I’d like to introduce you to our four engineer-volunteers who make it happen.

First is our board member-engineer Jim Carollo, who retired from WGN radio after 43 years as their Chief Engineer. He has been a board member of Huntley Community Radio from the day we incorporated, and also is our station’s Chief Engineer. In other words, he’s in charge of everything technical. He has three great volunteer-engineers helping him. They are:

Eric Thomas, who programs our station’s Automation System, the system that actually puts us on the air. And if you like the music we play, it’s Eric who selects it all.

Robert (Bob) Yeoman, our Chief Operating Engineer who works with Jim on all technical problems and records our remote broadcasts of Centegra’s Physician Lectures (heard every Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 2-3:00 p.m.). In addition, Bob makes sure we comply with all the FCC’s (Federal Communication Commission) rules and regulations.

Ken Czerwinski, who maintains all of our computer equipment and the station’s local network.

Next time you’re tuned into 191.5 FM, or watching us on the internet, remember these folks – without them, we wouldn’t be on the air.

Next time, I’ll introduce you to our student interns from McHenry Community College, who do a lot of editing and other jobs while learning the radio business and earning college credits. Some of them even have their own shows.

Big news – WHRU is going to be the sound track of the Huntley 4th of July fireworks celebration. Watch for details.
