We have spent the past seven weeks learning about what makes our bodies toxic. This toxicity often makes us feel miserable and leads to numerous disease and early death. Some of the reasons are processed and overly-cooked food, larger portions than we need at mealtime, stuffing ourselves between meals, and pesticides in our food, air and water. Some of these chemicals come from air pollution, cigarette smoke, drugs, antibiotics, household cleaners, lotions, and sunscreen we apply to our skin. Even if we consumed the purest food possible, we still have the end process of metabolism which creates toxins.
We would never think of not changing the filters in our furnaces and cars or neglecting maintenance. They would not operate efficiently or give us good service or longevity; yet we do this to our bodies. As I observe people and teach them, there are many reasons people ignore the care of the one and only body given by God. Some factors that will keep us from our wellness goals are:
Liking the taste of food, especially sweets and packaged snacks.
Not being able to help oneself because of addiction.
Lack of education, especially from the medical field.
Not taking a realistic look at what our habits are really doing to our bodies.
Taking the easy approach of going to the doctor for medication, encouraged by the mighty pharmaceutical drug companies, even though drugs cover symptoms and don’t get at the real cause of disease.
Facing the temptations of the processed food industry and the restaurants.
Insurance pays for doctor visits; we cover the cost of buying healthier food. We need to consider that we spend our money according to our values, including junk food.
Probably the most difficult one is living in a society where the government does not encourage healthy eating, making it difficult by regulating what we can buy and not buy (such as raw dairy).
Surrounded by friends and family who do not share our desires and efforts.
Last, but not least, simply not wanting to act as we would have to give up too much pleasure.
