Q. I have started stopping by my motherā€™s house to make sure she is eating properly. I prepare meals for her for the week and leave them for her to warm up. Unfortunately, I find much of the food uneaten. She does, however, ā€œsnackā€. She has lost weight and I am worried about her. How can I encourage her to eat what I prepare for her? I am feeling a little discouraged.

A. It sounds like you are facing a challenge that many caregivers face. We want our loved ones to eat properly and it definitely is worrisome when they donā€™t eat properly. Elderly folks can lose their appetites for many reasons. It is very important that you speak with her doctor, though, to make sure there isnā€™t a physical issue making her uninterested in eating. Has she started any new medications? Again, this is something to discuss with her doctor. Once you have ruled out any medical problems, take a close look and see if you notice any signs that may help you understand why she may not be eating. Sometimes, seniors lose their ability to smell and taste, which can result in changes in appetite. This may make food taste bland. It is no surprise she likes to snack! Sweet and salty snacks are loaded with flavor and explains the draw to these types of food! Eating is a social activity and if you are able, why not sit with her and eat together? You may be surprised at how this one simple practice will encourage her. Set a regular schedule and make meal time a special time. If you donā€™t have the time to sit and eat together, perhaps a friend or nearby relative can help you with mealtime. A professional caregiver can also be a wonderful option, providing meal preparation, as well as offering companionship. A caregiver can be an encouragement to her in many ways, not just as someone who makes a meal for her. Take caution so that you donā€™t burn out! Tap into your local church or senior center for help. These groups can be a source of help as well have home meal delivery options. A few phone calls may open some options to you as well as bring a little relief and peace of mind.
