Miscellaneous Questions

By The Woodchucks

Q: I am concerned about the washing machine hoses…I want to order the FloodCheck hose(s), but would not know how to connect them. Do I need two: one for each hot and cold faucet? Is it easy to disconnect and connect these?

A: They connect the same way as a garden hose. You may need to use pliers to remove the old hoses. If you don’t have good hand strength you may want to snug the new hoses up with pliers so they don’t leak. You do need to replace both the hot and the cold hoses as either one could spring a leak.

Q: I live in DW, I have a wood table that needs refinishing. I was wondering if there is someone in your club that does this as a hobby or a side job. I would much rather have it done local then hauling it all over creation.

A: Most Woodchucks do not have much experience matching stain colors on furniture. Most furniture built in the shop is built from high quality hardwoods like walnut, cherry, or oak that have distinctive colors. These are finished with a clear finish so there is no stain matching. You really need someone who does refinishing all the time to get a good quality job.

Q: We’ve lived in NH3 in a Petoskey for about one year. Since move-in day, we have heard a loud cracking noise above the ceiling and in proximity to the fan and light in the hall bathroom. My brother, a carpenter, has been up there and can find nothing. Happens 2-4 times daily.

A: I asked at the Woodchuck monthly meeting and no one had that problem or had heard about it. Many people have loud popping noises in the winter when the temperatures are very low. This is rafter creep caused by rafters expanding and contracting with large temperature swings. One suggested it could be a bird living in a vent. If your brother has been up there he has more information on your problem than we have.
