Clara Biswas’ passion is compassion; she reaches out to the children working in the garbage dumps or wandering the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
While she said her father was always active in the church, she would travel with him as he went to visit, see about, and look in on some of their poor neighbors in Bangladesh, where she grew up.
According to Pastor Diana Otterbacher of the Zion United Methodist Church, Biswas believes that is where she got a heart for the poor.
Biswas is a Cambodian missionary whose organization, the Street Children Ministry, helps the children of Phnom Penh acquire an education with opportunities to study through scholarship, among other things.
Zion held a reception for Biswas on July 22, as the church has been supporting Biswas for a couple of years. According to Otterbacher, the United Methodist Church has a book of mission opportunities that lists the missionaries across the globe. The church was seeking a missionary in Asia when Sun City resident Susan Lafferty elected Biswas for one of the projects.
“She was very impressed with her,” Otterbacher said. “Susan was really the one who brought it to our attention and promoted it.”
The July 22 reception was held during what normally would have been a youth group meeting. Otterbacher said the reception was held then because the group had been collecting money to support Biswas and learning about her mission.
“They were grossed out by the fact there are children living in garbage dumps, and so they felt motivated that they wanted to do something,” she said. “It’s been their summer project; going door to door, hitting up family and friends for the Street Children Ministry.”
While the reception was held during the youth group meeting, Otterbacher said two representatives from nearby Cornerstone United and members of her church were also on hand to welcome Biswas.
“It is sometimes rare to get to meet these missionaries,” Otterbacher said. “But it has been interesting as we’ve talked about this. A couple of our kids were touched by it, to think they could go to another part of the world and be missionaries. Maybe we’re planting a seed in a future missionary.”
For any additional information regarding Biswas, her mission or the reception, Otterbacher said Tom and Susan Lafferty are willing to share such information and can be reached by phone at 847-669-3481.
