October tricks and treats: website woes and wonderful volunteers

By Dorothy Litwin

Do you know what’s happening on Sunday October 24? It’s that time of the year when you load up on candy and other treats. Of course…it’s HALLOWEEN but it’s NOT. Halloween is still going to be October 31, but October 24 is TRICK OR TREAT TIME FOR SUN CITY. So be ready when your doorbell rings and little Munchkins say “trick or treat.” It happens from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday. And then, the best part: after 3 p.m. and it’s done, you eat the leftovers.

Unfortunately, Huntley Community Radio received a trick and no treat last week. I’ve always believed in the goodness of my fellow man. But how do you explain people who do something awful just to disrupt things. Last week, for some unknown reason, Huntley Community Radio’s website got “hacked.” That means someone, for no good reason, maliciously corrupted the site by undetected malware during the week of October 5. In an effort to continue our uninterrupted support of our website community of listeners, members of our technical team took prompt corrective action to restore a reliable backup version of our website. The positive outcome of this occurrence is that a new, attractive and more secure website is aggressively being developed that will be fully operational by the end of October. Access to the website will remain the same as before by going to www.huntleyradio.com or www.huntleyradio.org

And now, I’d like to introduce another of our “behind scenes” volunteers – Ken Czerwinski We are so fortunate having Ken as a volunteer. He has a tremendous background in the computer world. He designed and wrote much of the software that automated all areas of Triton College, and as their Associate Director of Information Services, he managed a staff of nine programmers, got the college started on the Internet, created their first website, taught classes on developing web pages and also taught faculty and students in the use of e-mail. During his time at Triton, he took a three-year military leave of absence and joined the U.S. Army as a computer programmer. Stationed in beautiful southern Bavaria, Germany, he began teaching programming classes at the Army Education Center. Following his stint in the Army, he joined the Army Reserves as a computer programmer and advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was the non-commissioned officer in charge of managing a data processing system.

After retiring from Triton College, he began designing new websites, but discovered he enjoyed the joys of retirement, He and his wife, Karen, moved to Sun City and became very active in the Computer Club, worked for the community association as a part-time computer technician. When Huntley Radio began, he became our volunteer computer technician. As a licensed ham radio operator, he has always had an interest in radio, and he says that his work at WHRU has been extremely interesting and rewarding.

In addition to computers, Ken also enjoys photography and motorcycling, and has ridden his motorcycle to 48 states. Every summer he volunteers a week at the motorcycle speed trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thank you, Ken, for all you do for our station.
