Q. I have relocated to the area and I am searching for a new doctor. I was very comfortable with my former doctor, and I find myself challenged in trusting a new practitioner. How do I know who would be a good fit for me?
A. Finding a new doctor and establishing yourself with a good team is critical. It can be daunting to find a doctor in a new area, because you are right, there are many, many choices especially in this area. Word of mouth is one of the most common ways to find someone you can trust, but getting a name from a friend is just the beginning of the process.
Start by thinking about what type of doctor you prefer. A general practitioner covers all the bases, so that might be a good place to begin. We know, however, there are many choices. Perhaps an internist, or a holistic, integrative physician is something to consider. Keep in mind you may have to check with Medicare to see if holistic practitioners are covered (in most cases, they are not). Perhaps you want to find a doctor that specializes in senior care. Once you settle on the type doctor, you can begin the selection process by considering some key areas. A doctor’s staff is an important consideration. How do they interact with you when you call to make an appointment? How are you treated when it is time for your appointment? What is the wait time like? Is it easy to get in to see the doctor if your need is urgent? These are important questions to consider. With regard to the doctor himself, how is his bedside manner? Does he spend time listening when you speak? How much time does he take with your questions? Learn what the hospital affiliation is for the doctor you are interested in, and how that hospital performs. Find a doctor who is connected to the hospital you prefer. Take your time, take good notes, and use your discernment to partner with the right physician for your health. If you are tech savvy, you may even find reviews about the doctor on the internet. A caring doctor with an attentive team is vital to your relationship and trust level. It is important to do your homework before you make him part of your team!
